About the Coffee
The Kawa Kanzururu Cooperative is a group made up of 1,848 farmers – 231 women and 1,617 men – that farm and live on the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountain Range in eastern Congo. There are 24 micro mills located along this range that act as gathering places for these farmers, selling their coffee to be grouped together with other neighboring farmers, as most producers here grow on very small pieces of land. This area borders Virunga National Park, which is home to some of the last remaining Mountain Gorillas in the world! The soil here is volcanic and with ample rainfall and high elevations, coffee growing conditions are superb. The Kawa Kanzururu Coop is part of the Virunga National Park's Coffee project, which also works closely with a charity called Farm Africa. Farm Africa helps these farmers with sustainable farming practices, boosting yields, and opens up access to bigger trade markets for them.
