About the Coffee
Back in May of 2022, I had the absolute pleasure of visiting some coffee growing areas in the Western Province of Rwanda. Hills, hills, hills, some of the most beautiful terrain I've ever seen, and some of the most delicious coffee I've ever tasted. The group I was with was there to visit a few different coffee washing stations in the area, all unique in their own way, near each other but seemingly far away. Musasa washing station sits on the shores of Lake Kivu, at the bottom of a hill that some other coffee roasters and I had the pleasure of riding mountain bikes on. An hour descent down a rocky road on a mountain bike through the hills of Rwanda... Needless to say, it was a memorable day! – Head Roaster Nolan

Coffee growers from all over this province bring their ripe coffee cherries to the Musasa station, where they sell their cherries for further processing. In addition to receiving fair prices for their coffees from the exporters, the producers also take part in farmer training programs, quality improvement projects, and environmental sustainability projects. The exporter also runs projects designed to help with the growers overall livelihoods, supporting women's cooperatives, and offer training on alternative income generating activities.

The coffee starts its processing journey by being floated in water to easily remove the 'floaters' – or coffee with any insect damage or low density. The cherries are then pulped and fermented for up to 20 hours to start the process of the removal of the mucilage, then the coffees are fully washed in water, and dried on raised beds in the sun.
