About the Coffee
Back in November, a couple of us Anodyne employees traveled to the town of Planadas in the Tolima region of Colombia plopped right in the middle of the Central Andes mountains. We traveled to Colombia with another roaster, and the importer we work with for this coffee, to meet some of the managers and producers that form the Asociación De Productores De Café Especial La Orquidea, or ASOPROCAFEES for short. This organization was created in 2014 and has continued to grow exponentially with hard work from contributing members and from leaders like William Mendozae, one of the founders of the organization that pulled the whole group of growers together.
•
William knows many of the small producers who live on farms tucked away in the hills along the stretch of road (a beautiful, scary, muddy road – that's another story) that connects Planadas to Neiva, helping them to better their growing practices, and in turn guaranteeing them a good price for their hard work. The group has an office in Planadas, fully equipped with a quality control lab and cupping room, staffed with a knowledgeable crew that accepts coffee deliveries from local producers, measuring water moisture on the spot. They have high standards of what they accept, knowing that the coffees they buy will be making up larger lots that will be exported to roasters like us.
•
The lot itself is a collection of fully washed coffees that come together to form a sweet, juicy, and vibrant profile. Most of this coffee was processed right on the organic-certified farms where it was grown at high elevations of 1,400 - 2,000 MASL. Tasting notes we find are of cherry, milk chocolate, caramel, honeydew melon, sweet throughout with a nice medium-roasted hot cocoa-like body.
