About the Coffee
This full-bodied and citrus-forward stunner comes to us from the Kianjuki factory which is located in Eastern Kenya. Around 800 coffee farmers deliver their ripe coffee cherries here. Nearby Mount Kenya is an extinct stratovolcano, (the conical kind of volcano you think of when a picture of volcano) and was formed due to rising magma from deep in earth's crust. Though it hasn't erupted in over 2 million years, this area is still an active geological hotspot, where not too far away the East African Rift is still diverging, slowly separating the continent of Africa. Next to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Kenya is the second largest peak in Africa, and these high elevations are perfect for growing coffee. There are also two distinct rainy seasons here that allow for two separate coffee harvests every year. Kianjuki factory is owned and operated by the Kirurumwe Farmers' Cooperative Society, the same cooperative that we've purchased our Kenyan lots over the past few years.Â
Processing
The coffee is fully washed and made up mainly of the variety SL28 and Batian. SL28 is coffee variety that was developed in the 1930s that flourishes in this area with help to its deep root structure and durability. Batian is a newer variety that produces coffee after only 2 years, and is also resistant to coffee leaf rust, hybrid super producers! These plants are very tough, grow well, and produce large yields even without irrigation. This is an AA grade coffee, which is the largest grade size in Kenya – you can easily see this when looking at the coffee. After the ripe cherries are delivered to the factory they are pulped, the coffee is then fermented for 12-16 hours to loosen the mucilage before being rinsed clean and laid out on raised beds to dry.Â
