About the Coffee
Burundi Kibingo Natural, a long standing Anodyne tradition and three-time Limited Release offering, is back in the building! This lovely natural processed coffee comes from the Kayanza region in the northern part of Burundi. Head Roaster Nolan was lucky enough to travel to Burundi a few years ago and visit this washing station. A note from Nolan:

Spending some time with Mark, the station manager, to learn how it all works was eye opening for me, and quite a formative part of my coffee understanding. The work these folks do is incredible, and we couldn't be more pleased to have this coffee back in the roastery.

The process starts with cherries being hand-picked and delivered to the station. Then the cherries are floated in water to easily find the defective lighter cherries, next they are sorted again by hand. The cherries are raked over throughout the day to ensure even during, it can take 3-4 weeks depending on the weather for the coffee to dry. On average, coffee growers in Burundi have about 250 coffee trees on their land, and the station collects coffee from about 3,500 growers every year. The workers at the station can process up to 750,000 kg (about 1,650,000 lb) of coffee cherries daily!

The coffee we are roasting this year was processed as a natural, meaning the cherries were laid out to dry on raised beds with the fruit of the coffee cherry still intact, imparting that sweet flavor into the seeds. Quite a process! Their hard work certainly set us up for success, and we are very pleased to give this coffee the honor of being named Snake Oil 14. Get it while it's hot, it won't be around long!
